Audrey at the age of sixteen almost of age found herself sitting in front of another judge listening to the state caseworker presenting her side of why she should be displaced again for who knows how many times.to go to a state girl's home till she reached the age of eighteen. She told the judge that Audrey had stolen money from her foster parents to vandalizing their garage while having a party with some of her school classmates while having an party where she had broke into her foster's father alchol cabinet. She even showed a picture of the glass door broken glass. The judge listened to every word that she told him. Then finally it was Audrey's turn. She told the judge on numerous of times at seven in the morning the younger children had to pick up after their parties while she fixed breakfast for them. She told him that they would not let her even have her grandfather's belongings that they kept in a locked box behind a locked door. The caseworker denied that and showed the judge the box. The judge listened then ordered her to a girl's home till her eigthteenth birthday After the judge ordered them to give her the box and left the courtroom her foster father that she had lived with for the last three years threw the wooden box and hit her in the check below her left eye. She thought well that wasn't the first time of him hitting her but it would be the last time.
The van that was coming to pick up the girl's broke down so they had to wait on another van along with several girls. Audrey and another couple of girls found that their cuffs wasn't metal cuffs and could be gotten out of easily and even the jailer had left a new security guard and the courthouse was closing for the day and had the girls sat in a room that wasn't locked down with their paperwork on a table. The van who came to take girls to different foster homes had pulled up and Audrey and the other two girls grabbed their paperwork and filed out with those girls then hid behind a wall where nobody could see them even the van driver, When the van pulled out they decided that they would break up and go their own way. Audrey walked around the building to the other side where there wasn't any cameras and where people in the community would just think of her walking and not think that she had just escaped.She left now with her clothes in her backpack and her grandfather's box not knowning what was inside. She started walking down the road heading toward a back road to where she wouldn't be noticed so much and saw a bike in a yard with a sign that read free. She looked it over and liked that the tires was aired up and looked new and had a nice basket behind the seat. The woman in the house came out and told her that her husband had replaced the tires on all three wheels and fixed the braking system and she wouldn't have to walk. Audrey's grandfather's box fit perfectly into the basket then she saw a box of free stuff that had old cooking utensils in it plus a couple of bungy cords and a sleeping bag in it. She put the sleeping bag in first then the cooking utensils and then her grandfather's box and secured it with the bungy cords. She checked out the light on the bike and he had even replaced the bulb and battery for it which was secured in a little box under the handlebars on the frame. She headed out on her own not knowing exactly where she was headed but knew she needed to get out of the city before the court system realized she wasn't delivered to the state's girl's home. She was near a bridge when she noticed a sherrif's deputy car parked and went into an alley where she wouldn't be seen and noticed a car with the hood up and there was a flashlight lying on the ground behind it so she scooped it up and went further down the alley to a side stret then she stopped and put the flashlight in the basket under the bungy cords Down the road aways was another yard sale and there was a bigger camping latern with batteries in it and the young teenage boy who owned it said he liked the wooden box and would exchange it for the latern. Audrey opened the box and saw that mainly it was paperwork of some kind and a little jewerly box that played music when the key on the button was wrung up. She stuff that stuff into her packpack and hung the latern on the left handle bar .So far she had to steal one flashlight and decided to take it back. The young man whose car still had the hood up came out and Audrey told him that the flashlight was rolling down the alley and she picked it up and was going to give it back to him but he said sometimes it doesn't work good and he got mad and threw it down so she could have it if she could get it to stay on for her. She put it back into her basket and would see what was going on with it later. She didn't have much money so it would have to do some way. She did get out of the city and saw an overpass where she could bunker down for the night and realized that it was going to be a long journey because with schol in she could only ride early in the morning or in the evening to keep from a red flag going up. She could use the excuse she had just stopped at a yard or garage sale and got these things to take home.
