What we may run into could cause a horrible battle with people being hurt. We must stop them!” Over about three hours they looked at maps of the bank and streets there and made a plan for defense.

The robbery afternoon came. Seven black cars parked outside the First National Bank. The men went inside. Guns were pulled. Threats and orders were given. Innocent people in the lobby were frightened for their lives. The vaults were opened, loot was found and removed. The undercover police and some of those outside in uniform displayed weapons and yelled brisk challenges to the robbers. Machine gun volleys sent staggered sharp reports into the silence. Three undercover policemen and five bystanders fell to the floor in pools ob blood with screams of painful agony from their wounds. The robbers hurried outside and into their waiting cars.
