Sitting on a bench trying to console each other a group of children started making fun of them being nothing but bullies..The girls ran into the local library trying to get away from them. The librarian questioned them what had happened. When she was informed of what the other children was saying the librarian remembered something.
She took them to a back room and told them that their parents had went on a trip and was listed as missing. She wanted to show them a filmstrip of a newspaper article of their parents came up missing while on a road trip mapping out route 66 across the state of Missouri for a mapping company but wasn't able to find it.
The girls left the library determined not to ever participate in any school sports. Their uncle Sam had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.The girls didn't want to upset either their uncle or aunt so they kept quiet . They had nobody but themselves to lean on. They made a pact that day to do everything together
Amanda and Ashley spent the rest of the summer in their two story clubhouse while their uncle and aunt drove two hours each way to a cancer center for his cancer treatments. The attic which had been their playroom, then their special place to get away from the bullies. It would have still been their special room. It had to be used as a storage area.
