A frown played on his brow. “Then why does she give her parents so much trouble? Did she not understand the danger her behaviour held for everyone involved? She is inconsiderate and spoiled.”

“How dare you speak of things you don’t know?” she fumed. “Have you ever considered that she might be seeking her father’s attention?”

“Why does a grown woman need...?” he asked surprised.

“Why do you hate her, Miguel?” She cut him short.

He blinked, surprised. “I-I don’t... I just... I don’t understand why she does what she does.”

“She doesn’t know...” Diane tried to explain.

“Impossible!” he snapped. “She lives in a house overrun with vampires. How can she not know?”

“Something major happened years ago.” Shifting uncomfortably. “You should ask Joseph,” she said and searched for Alex. A tidal wave crashed onto the beach, taking everything with it as it retreated. “Shit!” Leaping forward, she tried to sprint at a normal pace.

Miguel followed her with his eyes. His stomach clenched as an ice-cold hand squeezed his already dead heart. A huge wave rolled over Alex and the little girl, just soaking the mother. He dashed forward, passed Diane and cared less who noticed right then.
