“Every eight hours?” Erik felt his eyebrows furrow at the thought of being poked with a sharp object several times every day.

“I know it sounds like a lot of injections, Mr. Sokoloff, but the more aggressive we are, the better our chances are that you’ll be completely cured.” She glanced back down at the file. “And you’ll recover faster, as well. Three weeks of these injections will take quite a toll on your body.”

“Three weeks?” Erik stared into the dense army of tree trunks, trying to remember his conversations with Jurgis. “I thought your grandfather said it would be four.”

“It will be four,” she said. “The last week is simply an observation period. It’s important that we be absolutely sure we’ve completely cleared the virus before you leave our care.”

“But then I’ll be cured?”

“If everything goes as planned.”

Erik felt himself frown again. When he arrived a week ago Jurgis assured him the treatments would cure him of the infection. Erik inhaled a deep breath of damp forest earth and tried to let the earthy scent of the trees comfort him.

“Mr. Sokoloff,” Catherine said, closing the file and bringing it up to her chest. “My grandfather and I have spent our entire careers developing this treatment regimen. Our track record with men your age is excellent.”
