"I know," she said, quickly looking away. "While I longed for the simplicity and quiet of living here, it wasn't time for me to come home."

"What about now?"

Caitlin searched his eyes for love and understanding . "I'm where I belong." The words came straight from her heart and she hoped they reached into his heart. Had Barbara left a wall too high to climb and too thick to break apart when she left after five years of marriage to Garrett? Caitlin wanted to find the right tool to break it down for him, but something told her it was his job.

Moments passed before Garrett spoke. "So you meant it when you said you're staying?"

"Yes," she finally spoke. "I have no idea what I'll do with this place, but I have to try."

"You'll succeed." His gaze never roamed from her and she felt a twinge of pink settle on her cheeks. She would not trade this moment or feeling for anything. "I'll see you tomorrow. Get some rest, sweetie." He touched her cheek and then left.

Warmth from his hand lingered on her face as songs played in her head. Caitlin waltzed around the front porch in the cool night air. She would never tire of listening to the man or being in his arms. Would they ever find the same tune and be partners for life?

Her steps led her inside. She started upstairs when she remembered the coffee cups. Outside, a breeze settled over her that offered warmth, love, and security. She heard wind whisperings reminiscent of the love, laughter, hopes, and dreams that built the Double C. "I'll find a way for this place to prosper again, granddaddy."

As Caitlin floated upstairs she had forgotten the stranger and the uneasiness. The two most important men in her life were guiding her, loving her, and helping her achieve her dreams. "Life can only get better," Caitlin said, lying in bed, the mattress conforming to her body while she snuggled under the homemade quilt with blue and purple stars.
