‘I’m sure I don’t know but I’m starting to worry myself. Supper’s ready and- here! that’s his car in the drive. And what do you know? I believe he’s got someone with him!’

Raising an eyebrow, Lorne went to the window. His wife had gone back to preparing supper, but stopped in shock when her husband said in a low voice, ‘Something’s happened! Get the first-aid out, will you, luv? That girl’s hurt! Looks like Davie’s got a few scratches, too.’

Marion turned at once from concerned parent to concerned parent and RN.

As the two young people entered the back door, David bearing the girl’s belongings in a tattered blanket and his own pack, David noticed his father at once and began to explain.

Heading him off, Lorne said, ‘Saw you coming. Just set those things down right there. Mother’s in the sitting-room waiting for you.’

Janice, Sabrina and Danny, David’s younger siblings, had come to investigate and stared at David and the newcomer in awe.

‘Davie, what’s happened?’ Sabrina blurted.

‘Never you mind, luv,’ her father said quietly. ‘The three of you get supper started whilst Mum and I get things sorted. Okay?’
