His gaze narrowed; he knew that this had nothing to do with the Vhurd-aq. "Feel what?"

She struggled to find the words. "Anest, what happened to you? For a moment I thought you were . . . someone else."

His eyes became hard, though disfocused, his thoughts turned inward. "Then it wasn't my imagination. It happened to you too." He took her firmly by the hand, and with his free hand, reached into his shirt and withdrew his talisman, speaking a few quiet words . . .

They found the others in the kitchen. Belloc was deep in conversation with Caspar and Burli, while Mullen and Pip were busy about fixing supper. Abruptly, all conversation ceased when Belloc saw Anest's face.

"Belloc, something is out there. Something bad."

Alarmed, the wizard reached for his staff which was leaning in the corner. "Where?"

"At the edge of the Wood."

Belloc thought quickly, then said, "Mullen, Pip, arms yourselves and come with me. There are several men in the garrison and they may be in danger. Anest, use your talisman to make sure nothing succeeds in coming inside. Unless it's us, of course," he added wryly. "I suggest the rest of you arm yourselves as well."
