It was a beautiful Monday morning and the first day of the fifth grade for Lindsey. With such a successful finish of the fourth grade, Lindsey didn’t seem to mind. She was fully prepared for the fifth grade. While Lindsey was beginning the fifth grade, her older sister Laura was starting the eighth grade, her younger brother Mike Jr. was starting the fourth grade, and her oldest sibling, brother Kyle (who didn’t live with them) but was being raised by their grandmother, was starting his last day of high school and preparing for high school graduation. As the school bell rang, Lindsey and her classmates entered the classroom and began taking their seats. As soon as everyone was seated, Mrs. Denmark, the schools fifth grade teacher stood in front of the class and introduced herself. After her introduction, she began to place student name tags on each desk. Fifth grade was quite different from the fourth grade. In the fourth grade, students got to choose which seat they wanted to sit in throughout the year. But for the fifth grade, their seats were chosen by the teacher. One by one each student had to get up and move to their assigned seats. Many students were uncomfortable as the desks were all different sizes and didn’t fit the students who sat in them. But for Mrs. Denmark that didn’t seem to matter.Though all of the students complained, Mrs. Denmark refused to make any changes. As the students did their best to make themselves comfortable, Mrs. Denmark began roll call. Due to the excessive noise, some of the students including Lindsey, didn’t respond because they didn’t hear their name called. After taking roll call Mrs. Denmark went over the names of the students that didn’t respond and called them out again. This time they heard their names and responded. After completing roll call, Mrs. Denmark asked Lindsey why she didn’t respond the first time. Lindsey explained that she didn’t hear her call it, because of all of the noise. Mrs. Denmark advised Lindsey, that the reason she didn't hear her name being called, was because she was talking, and not paying attention.
