"So it would seem." Mrs. Randall's face softened. "Jessie, I have known for a very long time of your infatuation with Robbie," she said. "I disregarded Catherine's warnings because I had no inkling that Robbie would ever behave dishonorably. I am disappointed in you both, but Robbie most of all." Her words were severe, but her eyes were still kind.

There was no answer that I could give. I said nothing, my eyes downcast.

She stood. "I shall explain to Mr. Randall that you must marry at once," she said.

"You must have protection from your mother and father under the law."

I looked up at her again. I could not speak. My heart was in my throat.

"You poor, poor girl," she said, and left the room.
