At 8:30, she left her office and made her way down the hall toward her classroom. The students in the hall were slowly moving toward the first class of the day and several of them spoke to her in passing. This was only her third semester here at this school but most of the students knew her by name and her classes were always full. Often she would have to turn down some asking to be added to her roster.

When class began, she always started with a short discussion on the news before moving into her lectures. This gave her a good idea of who was paying attention, let her know what was going on around them and she got to see who was serious about the career choices they had made.

Midway through her lecture, Dean Jacobs interrupted. “Dr. Cole, I need to have a word with you please.”

She nodded and told him she would be there as soon as the class was finished.

He interrupted her again and explained, “No, now please.” He turned to her students and stated that her class was dismissed.

She quickly looked at him in surprise as well as with a mild irritation that he would do this to her. She had an assignment that they needed to begin before next class.
