A half hour later, John met Jennifer downstairs in the lobby. She was standing by the door next to her suitcases. He walked up and smiled. "I'm glad I was able to change my schedule too." She gave him a halfhearted smile and then looked outside. John's heart felt heavy, she was giving him the cold shoulder. Their hotel water taxi arrived and they were helped aboard. As they pulled away from the dock, both looked back longingly at their hotel growing smaller in the distance.

Once aboard their train, John and Jennifer sat across from each other in their coach car. There were only two other people beside themselves in the car once they got underway. John remembering how romantic their ride out had been as he stared through the window at the Italian countryside going by. Jennifer had brought a magazine to read. She sat there deep in concentration John didn't try to talk to her. An hour into their trip, John got up and started to walk away, then turned back around. "I'm going to get something to drink, would you care for anything?"

She looked up from the magazine article. "A coke would be nice, thanks." As John turned and walked down the aisle, she stared at him, with a sad look on her face she dropped her head and stared at the floor in front of her seat, her eyes tearing up slightly.

After John returned they sat there in silence again, she was still reading her magazine. He reclined his chair and closed his eyes, within a few minutes, he was asleep. Jennifer noticed that he was asleep and put her magazine down on the empty chair next to her. She looked across to John, her eyes welled up again this time tears flowed down her face she repeatedly wiped them. Her heart felt like it was breaking, she had just realized that she had fallen in love with John. She knew it was wrong, she had to be strong and concentrate on Michael. As much as she tried, she couldn't. Her thoughts drifted back to the great times she had with John here and her intense feelings for him. She wept, not able to hold the tears back.

John was brought out of his nap sometime later by the sound of the trains public address system. The voice intoned something in Italian and then in French and then again in English. They were coming in to a station. John noticed that Jennifer had reclined her chair and was sleeping. As the Porter walked by John stopped him. "How much longer till we arrive back in Rome?"
