“Just listen, please. I have to say this.”
“I’m listening. Can’t say I like what I’m hearing.”
“I’m trying to clear the air. Tell the truth.” I faced him, my hands behind my back. “I’ve been attracted to Rafe, but I know you and I have a relationship, an exclusive relationship. Then this demon got inside me, and somehow I lost control.” I held up my hand when Jerry started to speak. “No, I’m not going to say the Devil made me do it. I’m the one who decided to sneak around and, as Mara said, ‘shag the bodyguard.’” I winced when I saw Jerry’s expression harden. “But, Jerry, I can’t believe that was normal Glory behavior. Sure, Rafe is hot. And sure, Rafe made moves, but I usually have some resistance. And the ability to remain true to the man I love.”
I shifted from one foot to the other. “That demon inside me did something to me, always whispering in my ear, urging me on. And I was on fire for any guy I saw. Honestly?” I looked Jerry up and down. “I wish you’d been here so you could have had the benefit of those hormonal surges or whatever the hell they were.”
“Shit, Glory, I don’t think I can listen to much more of this.” Jerry leaned forward, his elbows on his knees.
“There isn’t much more.” I cleared my throat. “I know it’s going to take a while for you to get over this. To forget what I did. To forgive what I did. But while you’re working through it, can we declare a truce?”
Jerry stared at me for a long few minutes, his dark eyes giving away none of his thoughts. I held my breath, wondering whether he was going to walk out the door and out of my life or give us another chance. Finally, finally, he leaned back and stretched out his long legs, propping his boots on my coffee table.
“A truce, you say. Depends. What movie are you holding there? Not one of those English things with country houses and men forever taking tea, is it?”
“Braveheart.”
“Ah, well. Truce it is, then.” Jerry smiled and patted the seat next to him. “Will there be benefits with this truce?”
“Guess we’ll have to work out the terms, won’t we?” I put in the film and settled beside him.
“Guess we will, lass. Guess we will.”
I handed him the remote. I knew my guy.
