Monty and Laura stopped talking as the lights dimmed, and the opening ceremony began with cowgirls on horseback racing into the arena at breakneck speed, each holding aloft one of the seven flags which have flown over California. Then the evening's entertainment began, and Laura found it an easy excuse to ask her handsome seatmate about aspects of the rodeo events. Monty, on his part, was more than happy to have an opportunity to talk to his lovely seatmate, so the night promised to be more enjoyable than either had anticipated.
