"Hayley, you have to trust that what I choose not to tell you is for your own good." She hugged her. "I do love you!"
Hayley's arms remained at her side. The tears streamed down her face.
Maddie pulled away, her hands still holding Hayley.
"Please don't be angry with me."
"I'm sad you won't confide in me."
"It's not that I won't---I can't."
Hayley held up the palm of her hand. "Please---"
They stood silent for a moment, not taking their eyes off each other.
Maddie turned and walked slowly to the door. As Hayley watched her leave, she felt more alone than ever before. Crawling back into bed, she pulled the blanket over her head. The tears continued to flow.
