Saundra laughed. "I don't know about that, but you obviously don't take it for granted. Have a nice evening. We'll see you tomorrow."

Alex left the building and climbed into his truck, shutting the door as he started the engine. Saundra was right. In the past he had taken it all for granted. Now he knew how quickly it could be taken from him. Life was good and he was going to work at keeping it that way.

Forty wasn't so old. The truth was, getting older still beat the alternative. There were worse things than growing old chronologically. There wasn't an age at which a person grew old. There was a time. That time was when people perceived themselves to be old. It didn't matter whether they were nearing forty or ninety.

With every second he was growing older. There was only one way to avoid that. Death was inevitable, but getting old was a choice. Eventually the children would leave home and start their own families. He wasn't fretting over that thought because it merely meant a change. There would be grandchildren and family gatherings. Growing older presented changes too, and they weren't all bad.

There was another thing to consider. Right now their children were young and impressionable. The things they observed now would set the mold for their future. A person should work to live, not live to work. Enjoying the clinic was fine, but his life shouldn't revolve around it. That was what Carmen was trying to tell him. Her life revolved around the children and him. All the rest was fluff.
